William and Charlotte Wiser were Presbyterianmissionaries in North India, appointed in 1915, and were active in thedevelopment of India Village Service, a demonstration project for theimprovement of village life. These papers document the work of the Wisers inNorth India, particularly their involvement in rural reconstruction and theirinterest in Indian folklore.

The Transylvania Presbytery was organized by appointment of the synods of New York and Philadelphia. The Synod of New York made part of the Presbytery of Abingdon into the Transylvania Presbytery, which encompassed the district of Kentucky and the settlements on the Cumberland River.
